Troubleshooting

Each entry quotes the message as Sirius shows it. The log for all of this is the Output panel’s Sirius AI channel; setting the environment variable SIRIUS_AGENT_DEBUG before launching also prints it to the console.

“No model is available yet. Add a provider key with Sirius: Set API Key (Ctrl+Shift+P), or start Ollama and pull a model — Sirius finds it automatically.” — nothing is configured. Keyed providers are listed only once they have a key; Ollama only while it is reachable. Run Sirius: Set API Key, or start Ollama and pull a model.

“⚠️ Anthropic API key not configured. Run Sirius: Set API Key from the command palette.” (same for Gemini; “⚠️ No OpenAI API key set. Run Sirius: Set API Key. Get one at …” for the OpenAI-compatible providers) — the model was selected but its provider has no key.

“⚠️ No endpoint set for Custom OpenAI-Compatible. Set sirius.ai.custom.baseUrl.” — the custom entry needs a URL, including the /v1 suffix.

“Language model unavailable” on a freshly opened window — a request raced the model discovery that runs at startup. Send it again.

Message Meaning Do
⚠️ Anthropic rejected the API key. Run Sirius: Set API Key to enter a new one. (401/403; same wording for other providers) the key is wrong, revoked, or for another product paste a fresh key; keys are stored as typed and not validated when saved
⚠️ Gemini API Error (403): … Gemini returns its raw error body read it — usually the key or a disabled API
… does not recognise that model. (404) the model id is not available to your key or region pick another with Sirius: Select AI Model
Rate limited by Anthropic — try again in Ns (429) too many requests wait, or lower the pace
… has reached its monthly spend cap, so requests are paused until it resets the account’s budget the provider console
Anthropic rejected the request: … (400) a malformed request for that model if thinking is on, try Sirius: Toggle Thinking Mode to turn it off and report it

“⚠️ Ollama is not running. Start it with ollama serve in your terminal.” / “⚠️ Cannot connect to Ollama at http://…” — start Ollama, or fix sirius.ai.ollama.endpoint. With the wrong endpoint no models are listed at all.

“Model “…” is X.X GB — larger than the configured safety limit (12 GB). Loading it can freeze this machine.“ — the large-model guard. Use a smaller quantisation, or raise sirius.ai.ollama.largeModelBytes (0 disables it).

A model I just pulled is not in the picker. The Sirius: Select AI Model command queries the local servers live; the chat view’s own picker may need Developer: Reload Window to see a model started after Sirius.

A small model prints JSON instead of using tools. Expected on models without a tool API: Sirius prompts the tools and recognises calls written as text. If it still fails, the model is too small for agent work; use it for Ask and a larger one for Agent.

By design it fails silently. In order: sirius.ai.enable is {"*": false} by default — turn it on for the language; no local backend was found — auto needs a running Ollama with a model whose name says it is a code model, or a configured llama.cpp URL; the model does not support fill-in-the-middle — use one that does (qwen2.5-coder, codestral, starcoder2, codegemma); you changed sirius.ai.completions.model — reload the window. See Local models.

“Stopping here — this task took more tool rounds than expected. Say “continue” to keep going.“ — the 25-round cap per message. Say continue.

Results end with “[truncated]” — a tool result over 24,000 characters was cut; ask for a line range or a narrower search. searchFiles looks at the first 100 matching files and returns 20 hits, listDirectory hides node_modules, .git, dist and similar, and all file tools work in the first folder of a multi-root workspace.

“Search text not found. Read the file again — it may have changed.” / “Search text appears more than once; include more surrounding context to make it unique.” — edit_file needs a unique, exact match; the model usually retries. “… already exists. Read it, then use edit_file to change it” — create_file never overwrites.

The model does not follow my rules. Rules are read from the first workspace folder only, from .siriusrules, .sirius/rules.md and AGENTS.md, capped at 8,000 characters in total — see Rules and context.

Keys vanish after a restart (Linux). No OS keyring was available, so the editor kept the secret in memory only; it will have shown An OS keyring couldn’t be identified for storing the encryption related data in your current desktop environment. Run a Secret Service provider (gnome-keyring) or KWallet, or accept the dialog’s weaker file-based store, which writes "password-store": "basic" into ~/.sirius/argv.json. Then set the key again.

A key is still in settings.json. It is moved into the keyring and the setting is cleared at the next start, with a toast saying so.

In 1.118.7 Sirius’s three default shortcuts shadowed stock ones: Ctrl+Shift+M (the Problems view), Ctrl+Shift+T (Reopen Closed Editor) and Ctrl+Shift+I (the editor’s own open-chat-in-agent-mode). From 1.118.8 Sirius binds no keys; its commands are in the Command Palette, and you can give them shortcuts in Keyboard Shortcuts. See Keyboard shortcuts.

From 1.118.8 the agent’s file tools read and write only inside the folders you opened. A model asking for ../../something or an absolute path elsewhere gets this message instead of the file. To share a file from outside, attach it to your message — attached files go to the model with the prompt.

  • The status-bar model item refreshes when you pick a model, not when settings change.
  • The update check runs on every install, the distribution packages included; update.mode turns it off.
