Remote server

Every release carries sirius-server-linux-x64.tar.gz and sirius-server-linux-arm64.tar.gz — the headless half a remote extension installs on the machine you connect to, built from the same commit as the editor. Each has a .sha256 sidecar and a build attestation. There is no macOS, Windows or Alpine server.

glibc 2.28 and GLIBCXX 3.4.25 or newer — Debian 10, Ubuntu 20.04, RHEL 8 and later. Both architectures are built against that floor and started on Debian 12, Ubuntu 22.04 and Rocky 9 by the release pipeline before anything is published. The tarball brings its own Node; nothing else needs installing.

Terminal window
mkdir sirius-server && tar -xzf sirius-server-linux-x64.tar.gz -C sirius-server --strip-components 1
sirius-server/bin/helpers/check-requirements.sh # non-zero exit = this host is below the floor
sirius-server/bin/sirius-server --version # first line: the version
sirius-server/bin/sirius-server --host 127.0.0.1 --port 8317 --accept-server-license-terms \
--without-connection-token --server-data-dir ~/.sirius-server
curl http://127.0.0.1:8317/version # answers the release commit

bin/sirius-server does not run the requirements check itself; run it first on a host you are unsure about. The server stores its state in ~/.sirius-server (--server-data-dir or VSCODE_AGENT_FOLDER to move it). Useful options: --host, --port (0 for a random port, or a range), --socket-path, --connection-token / --connection-token-file / --without-connection-token (only when the connection is secured by other means), --install-extension, --reconnection-grace-time. The server has no telemetry, like the editor.

The editor’s product.json points serverDownloadUrlTemplate at these tarballs, so a remote extension that follows the convention — Open Remote - SSH from Open VSX is the usual one — can fetch the server matching your editor on first connect. Sirius ships no remote extension of its own: the built-in set is git, GitHub, GitHub authentication and tunnel forwarding.

Tunnels (sirius tunnel) are not available: the release builds no tunnel binary.
